Listed below is an index to about 2,400 obituaries printed in The Tawas Herald, published at Tawas City Michigan for the years 1892-1949. Also included are some shorter death notices, funerals descriptions, thank-you cards, and memorials etc. The index was prepared from a hard copy of The Tawas Herald that William Neil Thornton donated jointly to the HSGS and the AuSable-Oscoda Historical Society. A microfilmed copy of these newspapers do not exist. This index was prepared from an incomplete set of newspapers, with about 25 percent missing. Extraction of obituaries were done by James Donaldson, Rosemary Klenow, Ray Knuth, Doris Lowell and Mary Ann Yehl. Format for Volume 1 (1892-99): Name; age or birth date; death date; newspaper reference; and military service. Format for Volume 2 (1900-29): Name; age or birth date; death date; veteran information; and newspaper reference. Format for Volume 3 (1930-39): Name; age or birth date; death date; newspaper reference; and military service. Format for Volume 4 (1940-49): Name; age or birth date; death date; newspaper reference; and military service.
