History of the City of Brooklyn, New York

Description (from source site)
Published between 1867 and 1870 by subscription, the author states that, "My purpose has been to present to my fellow-citizens of Brooklyn a full and reliable history of the city of their residence, from its early and humble beginnings to its present position as the third city of the American Union." Coverage of the publication begins with the earliest settlements in the area in the 1600s and traces the history of Brooklyn (including the Old Town, and Village of Brooklyn, the Town of Bushwick, and the Village and City of Williamsburgh) through to 1869. Documenting historic events such as the British Occupation of Brooklyn during the American Revolution and the area's involvement in the War of 1812, this history also contains the history of churches, schools, parks, and other institutions in the area, biographies from founding and prominent citizens, information about businesses, buildings, transportation, newspapers in the area, and much more. Through this history of the area, those with roots in Brooklyn will be able to catch a glimpse of Brooklyn as it was in the times of their ancestors, and can provide valuable clues as to new avenues of research.
