Elizabeth Williams, A Child of the Sea
Description (from source site)
Raised by a French-speaking mother and an English-speaking father, Elizabeth Williams spent most of her early years on the islands of Lake Michigan. This database, originally published in 1905, is a collection of her memoirs of growing up in Michigan in the nineteenth century. Filled with vivid descriptions of such communities as Manistique and Traverse City, it also chronicles the family's relationship with the Indians of the region. This relationship included fostering a young daughter of an Ottawa chief before her arranged marriage. For researchers seeking to better understand settlement life in western Michigan before the twentieth century, this can be an interesting and illuminating narrative.
