Description (from source site)
Herring Lake dominated the life of Benzie County, Michigan residents in the nineteenth century. This database is a brief history of the lake according to John Howard, a self-styled "bard of Benzie." It chronicles the history of the area during the 1800s, including legends, and anecdotes. Additionally, it provides an abundance of antiquarian information about local artifacts, town characters, Indians, and memorable occurrences. It also discusses the area's transformation from a defunct lumber community to a summer resort. For researchers of ancestors from early western Michigan, this database can illuminate the history of the region and provide important details to understanding life on the frontier.
