Leaving his native home of Sweden in 1847, Hans Mattson traveled with his family to America to begin a new life. This database is a collection of reminiscences written in his later life. It contains his memories of growing up in Scandinavia, crossing the Atlantic aboard a sailing ship and his appointment as U.S. consul general to India. Researchers will find rich descriptions of his early adventures in Minnesota, experiences in the 3rd Regiment during the Civil War, working for the railroad, and being a laborer in the Midwest.
