Universal public education was still a relatively new social phenomenon in nineteenth century America. Among the first states to form a teachers association, New York was also one of the first states to regulate teacher qualifications. This database is a listing of members of the state Teachers Association in 1888. Each entry reveals the teacher's full name and town of residence. It provides the names of nearly 400 men and women. For those seeking learned ancestors from New York, this can be a helpful database.
