In accordance with an 1866 treaty, in 1888 the Congress of the United States appropriated $75,000 to be shared between the Cherokee, Shawnee and Delaware Indian tribes. This database is a transcription of the Wallace Roll of Cherokee Freedmen intended to identify those Cherokee entitled to a share of this money. Compiled by Special Agent John Wallace, it includes authenticated freedmen, admitted freedmen, those who died between 1883 and 1890, and "Free Negroes" associated with the tribe. Researchers will find information on over 3800 Cherokee including age, sex, and residence. For researchers of Cherokee ancestors, this can be an important source of helpful information.
