Men and women from all backgrounds came to California in the 1840s, many seeking the gold of the Sierra Nevadas. Peter Burnett was a district attorney from Missouri who came to the area in 1848 attempting to find his fortune. This database contains recollections of his early life in Missouri, his travels west, and his adventures as a gold prospector. Published in 1880, it contains descriptions of the political, banking and law communities of which he became a part in the 1850s and 1860s. For those wishing to better understand the politics of early California, this can be an informative database.
