Hastings, Northumberland East, Ontario, 1901 Hastings is located on Trent River in Northumberland County. United Empire Loyalists settled on the south side of the river in 1795 and natives lived on the north side until 1818. Hastings was first known as Crooks' Rapids, after James Crooks who built a grist mill in 1827 at the site. In 1851 the mill was sold to Henry Fowlds. Fowlds was also the first postmaster. Fowlds chose the name Hastings for the Marquis of Hastings. This database has over 750 entries of residents in the census sub-district of Hastings (F) in the census district of Northumberland East (#95) in 1901. Colborne Village, Northumberland East, Ontario, 1901 Colborne is located in Northumberland County. The area was settled in 1789 by Joseph Keeler, a United Empire Loyalist from Rutland, Vt. The community was first known as Keeler's Creek. In 1820 the first post office was called Cramahe after the township. Colborne was named in 1829 for Sir John Colborne. Colborne became a village in 1858. This database has over 1000 entries of residents in the census sub-district of Colborne Village (D) in the census district of Northumberland East (#95) in 1901. Brighton Village, Northumberland East, Ontario, 1901 Brighton is located in Northumberland County. This community was first settled in 1796 by United Empire Loyalist Obediah Simpson. Brighton was first called Singleton's Corners. Singleton's Corners was the name of the community because John Singleton was the first postmaster in 1831. The community was renamed for Brighton, England. Brighton village became a town in 1980. This database has over 1350 entries of residents in the census sub-district of Brighton Village (B) in the census district of Northumberland East (#95) in 1901. This database contains the full names, relationship to the head of the household, full date of birth, and birthplace as well as the year of immigration to Canada (if not Canadian by birth). The database also includes the National Archives film number, division number, page and family number to aid researchers in obtaining a copy of the actual record, if desired. This database will be of particular interest to researchers with Ontario ancestors.
