News of rugged California life was a regular part of some eastern newspapers in the 1860s and 1870s. This database is a collection of stories, anecdotes, and folklore as recorded by an eastern journalist and adventurer while living in the state. He provides a tour of the San Andreas Valley and other parts of northern California. Also included are several chapters about San Francisco, along with legends and tales of the area. For researchers seeking information regarding the culture in which ancestors may have lived, this can be a helpful database.
