William Kelly, Excursion to California, Vol. 1, 1849
Description (from source site)
In addition to the many Americans who either settled or vacationed in California in the nineteenth century, the area also drew Britons. Englishman William Kelly (1791-1855) visited California in 1849 and 1850, and his account of that trip was widely read. This database is the first volume of his delightful narrative. The volume takes him from England to California, between January and July 1849 and includes descriptions of New York City, Buffalo, Detroit, Ottawa, Illinois, and St. Louis. He records scenery, wildlife, and Native American tribes as well as buffalo, antelope hunts, and the party's stay in Utah. The book provides exceptional detail on the mechanics of a wagon train's operations. The volume closes with Kelly's arrival in California and his remarks on gold mining.
