In 1890, Charles Finch Dowsett, an English businessman, traveled across the United States by railroad and settled in Merced County, California to become an agent for land sales in the region. This database is a narrative he wrote regarding the West Coast and was originally published in 1891. In it he describes his journey across the country and his adventures on the train. He also extols the virtues of Merced County, focusing on the prospects for fruit farming. For those Ancestry.com patrons attempting to better understand the life of a settler in central California, this can be an interesting and helpful narrative.
