Charles Warner, Southern California, 1890

Description (from source site)
Editor of the Hartford Courant in Connecticut, Charles Warner was also a contributing editor to Harper's Magazine in the late nineteenth century. This database is his account of a vacation to Southern California in 1890. In it, he describes conditions of the area after the real estate collapse of 1886-87 and the prospects for economic growth in the next decade. It also contains his commentary on the region's climate, agricultural developments, and various tourist attractions. For researchers wishing to better understand the larger context in which their Southern California ancestors may have lived in the nineteenth century, this can be an illuminating narrative.
