Edward McIlhany, filled with the energy of youth, came to the gold fields of California in 1849, at the age of 21. He joined thousands of men, both young and old, seeking a future in the gold rush. His desire to break the confines of established society and find his fortune in the "Wild West" is illuminated in this narrative, written by him in 1908. Researchers will find vivid descriptions of his experiences prospecting, hunting, and running general store and hotel.
