Enos Christman, Life in California, 1849-52

Enos Christman, a printer's apprentice in West Chester, Pennsylvania, left his home and traveled to the gold fields of California in June of 1849. He returned three years later in the fall of 1852. This database is his journal during those years and a collection of his letters written to his fiancee, who remained in the East. Researchers will find descriptions of the Calabaras River and Mariposa diggings, and the authors adventures as a partner in publishing the Sonoma Herald. It also provides an account of his life in the Sonoma area between 1850 and 1852. For those wishing to better understand the life and culture of gold miners in California, this database can provide valuable insight.
