Franklin Buck, Yankee Trader in the Gold Rush
Description (from source site)
In an experience similar to many other East Coast natives, when Franklin Buck heard the reports of a gold rush in California he decided to seek his fortune there. In January of 1849 he set out for the West Coast and became a trader among the miners. This database is a collection of letters written by the young man to his sister living in Maine. He includes descriptions of sailing to San Francisco, managing a store in Sacramento, Marysville, and Weaverville. Also included is the account of his voyage to Tahiti and Hawaii in the 1850s. For those wishing to better understand the larger context in which their California ancestors may have lived, this can be an illuminating database.
