Henry Vizetelly, Four Months in the California Gold Fields

Henry Vizetelly, a pioneer in the publication of inexpensive illustrated books and magazines, was a London engraver who wrote about the California gold rush. This database is a well-researched, fictional account of one doctor's experiences in area in 1849. It was not until forty years after its publication in 1849 that the narrative was revealed to be fictional. The story begins with the doctor's arrival in San Francisco, continues with him traveling to Sutter's Fort, and then prospecting at Weber's Creek. A more authentic account of life in pre-gold rush California is provided as told to the author by an actual physician-prospector. Although many of the particular elements are fictional, the general feel and living conditions described in this narrative can be illuminating to researchers wishing to better understand area residents during the Gold Rush.
