Located near the New York, Pennsylvania border, the city of Elmira is the county seat of Chemung County. This database is a transcription of city directories originally published in 1889, 1890, 1891, 1892 and 1893. In addition to providing the resident's name, it provides their address and occupational information. It includes over 73,000 names, mostly heads of households. For the researcher of ancestors from south central New York, this can be an extremely valuable collection.
