Madoc is a township in Hastings County. Madoc was first the site of a Mohawk village.
Donald Mackenzie arrived in the early 1830s and built a saw mill and a grist mill.
For 20 years the community was known as Mackenzies Mills, then Hastings, then
Madoc. Madoc was named for Prince Madoc Ad Owaiin Gwenedd. In 1835, Uriah Seymour
and John G. Pendergast opened an ironworks that eventually employed 100 people.
Various difficulties caused the ironworks to shut down in 1845. The ironworks
were reopened with 200 workers in 1851. Five years later the industry employed
500 people. By the early 1860s the village had 4 carriage shops, 5 blacksmith
shops, 2 cabinet shops, a tannery, a watchmaker, and an organ company. By 1865
the community had a population of 900. In 1866 gold was discovered in Madoc Township.
The gold was first discovered on lot 18 of the 5th Concession (John Richardson's
farm) and was found by Marcus Powell and an old miner named Snider on Aug 15,
1866. Madoc was in newspapers in Europe. This was Canada's first gold rush, and
made the township a boom town. The population quickly rose to 5000. On 15 April
1866, 25 mounted police were stationed there to keep order. Most of the gold mines
failed but copper, lead, marble, quartz, talc, and lithographic stone were also
discovered in the area. Fire struck in 1873 and destroyed much of the village.
